A Few Days On Earth

이곳에 온 이후로 하루도 빠짐없이 살아오고 있어. 적어도 살아 있는 동안은 다른 방도가 없으니까. 물론 이 '살아있음'의 상태를 잠시 멈춰두고 싶을 때가 있기도 해. 살아 있다는 건 너무 지치는 일이기도 하거든. 그럴 때 난 난감해져. 불가능한 일을 꿈꾸고 있다는 생각이 들어서.

Since I arrived here, I’ve been living without pause. At least while I’m alive, what else can I do? Sometimes, I do wish I could suspend this state of being alive—because it’s exhausting. That’s when I start to feel this strange, stuck emotion. Let’s call it helplessness. Because I dream of things that simply can’t be.
시간이 지나, 나와 친구들은 좋은 대안을 찾아냈어. 영화를 만드는 것. 그건 '살아있음'을 잠시 중단하는 동시에 살아있을 수 있는 방법으로 꽤 효과적이었어. 그렇게 우리는 지구에서의 며칠을, 어쩌면 많은 날을 영화를 만드는 데 소비했어. 그제야 우린 조금은 산뜻해졌고, 약간은 기쁘기까지 했어.
But then, my friends and I stumbled upon something that felt like a good alternative—making films. It turned out to be surprisingly effective: a way to pause being alive, and yet feel more alive in the process. So we spent a few days on Earth—or maybe more—pouring ourselves into the act of making. Only then did we start to feel a little lighter. Even a little happy.
그런데, 어느 날 한 친구가 뜻밖의 말을 꺼냈어.
But one day, a friend said something unexpected.
그러니까 내 말은. '살아 있음'을 멈추는 방법은 따로 없다는 거야. 설사 영화를 찍는 순간에도 우리는 살아 있잖아. 그리고 살아 있다는 것은 무언가를 끊임없이 사용하고 있다는 의미야. 봐봐. 내가 대강 계산해본 거야.
What I mean is this: There’s really no way to stop being alive. Even while making a film, we’re still alive—which means we’re always using something.
Constantly. Here’s what I roughly calculated.
첫째, 우리가 영화를 찍은 4일 간 사용한 플라스틱의 양은
500ml 생수 66병
500ml 음료수 15병
2L 음료수 6병
플라스틱용기 대형 4개

플라스틱용기 소형 14개
그렇다면 우리가 사용한 플라스틱 제품들의 총 예상 탄소 배출량은 약 9.71kg CO₂ 야.
The amount of plastic we used over the course of four days was:

The estimated total carbon emissions from the plastic products we used is approximately 9.71kg of CO₂.
그리고 봐봐. 영화제작에서 이동은 불가피하잖아. 단순히 미팅을 진행할 때, 로케이션을 투어할 때, 촬영현장을 갈 때 등 모든 것이 이동이야. 이번에도 마찬가지였어. 그나마 이동횟수를 줄이고 차량을 축소 운영하기는 했지만.
Transportation is inevitable in film production. Whether it’s for meetings, location scouting, or traveling to the filming site, everything involves movement. For this project as well, we had to travel, so we stayed in Nonsan to minimize travel distance and operated with as few vehicles as possible.
일반적으로 휘발유 1리터당 탄소 배출량은 약 2.3kg CO₂로 알려져 있어.
LPG 1리터당 탄소 배출량은 약 1.6kg CO₂로 추정돼.
평균 연비는 약 9.3km/L 의 LPG 차량으로 1088km를 주행했을 때 예상되는 탄소 배출량은 약 약 187.18kg CO₂ 이고, 동일 연비 9.3km/L의 휘발유 차량으로 1088km를 주행했을 때 예상되는 탄소 배출량은 약 269.08kg CO₂ 야.
Generally, the carbon emissions per liter of gasoline are known to be approximately 2.3kg of CO₂, while for LPG, it is estimated to be around 1.6kg of CO₂ per liter.
With an LPG vehicle averaging 9.3 km/L, driving 1,088 km would result in an estimated carbon emission of approximately 187.18kg of CO₂.
In contrast, a gasoline vehicle with the same fuel efficiency of 9.3 km/L would emit approximately 269.08kg of CO₂ when driven the same distance of 1,088 km.

이어지는 숫자들. 친구는 강박적이라 할 만큼 숫자들을 읊어댔어.
그러면서 계속해서 말했어. "이건 말그대로 대강의 계산이야!"
And then came the numbers. My friend started rattling them off—almost obsessively. And like a chorus, she kept shouting between breaths, "It’s just a rough estimate, okay?"
즉, 이동만으로도 5톤이 넘는 이산화탄소를 배출한 셈이야. 이건 집 안의 모든 조명과 가전제품을 1년 넘게 내내 켜둔 것과 맞먹는 양이야. 영화를 찍기 위해 우리가 보낸 단 며칠동안 그만큼을 썼다니까?! 여기에 우리가 사용한 전기나 먹은 식사까지 더하면, 탄소배출량은 더 늘어날 수밖에 없어. 그리고 후반작업이 진행되는 동안에도 우리는 여전히 뭔가를 끊임없이 소비하고 있잖아?
In other words, we emitted over 5 tons of CO₂ just from transportation. That’s about the same as leaving all the lights and appliances in a house running non-stop for over a year. And we used that up in just a few days of shooting a film. Add in the electricity we used and the meals we ate, and the carbon footprint only grows. Even during post-production, we’re still constantly consuming—burning through something, little by little.
친구의 말을 들으면서 속으로 생각했어. '만약에 우리 영화가 해외 영화제라도 가는 날에는 우리가 탈 비행기가 배출할 탄소량까지 계산하겠다고 나서겠네.'
그러자 내 안에 묘한 반발심이 일기 시작했어.
As my friend kept talking, I thought, ‘If our film ever makes it to a film festival abroad, we’ll probably end up calculating the CO₂ from our flight too.’
That’s when a weird little voice inside me went, ‘Seriously?’
내가 하고 싶은 말은, 영화를 만드는 일도 다른 것과 마찬가지로 우리가 사는 이곳에 영향을 준다는 거야. 우리는 그 사실을 분명하게 인식해야 한다고 생각해.
What I’m trying to say is making films, like anything else, has an impact on this planet we all share. And I believe we need to recognize that, clearly.
좋아. 알겠어. 그래서 어쩌자는 건데?
OK. Fine. I got it. So now what?
이 숫자들이 너에겐 아무 의미가 없다는 거야?
Are you saying these numbers mean nothing to you?
아니. 하지만...
No. But...
그렇다고 아무것도 하지 않고 그냥 숨만 쉬고 있을 수는 없잖아.
아니지. 네 말대로라면 숨만 쉬어도 문제 아냐?
No. But we can’t just sit around breathing.
